Caring Clintons

15.10.03: IT'S LESS than a mile away from the White House, but it might as well be on another continent. There is no pomp, no ceremony, and not a secret service uniform in sight. African baskets adorn the picture windows, the walls are hung with handwoven carpets and pottery from around the world.

Welcome to the headquarters of Caring Now, the international foundation headed by America's former first lady, Hillary Clinton.

Caring Now aims to show the world how women's work has contributed to the common good. It also campaigns on behalf of carers and domestic workers, and sets up neighbourhood networks.

'In the past, carers have had to depend on family breadwinners to represent their interests in the public arena. The disastrous results are apparent.

'The time has come for traditional women to step into the political arena and speak for themselves,' said Clinton.

As president of Yale University, her husband, Bill, said he believed that his main contribution will be to show that 'what's good for women is also good for men'. MF
