A lesson in better results

30.09.12: PUPILS FROM Eastbourne have beaten high-flyers such as St Paul's in their number of A-level passes by working two hours a day less.

Grove Hill College is part of a research project at a nearby hospital. New pupils spend a day in the brain-scanning unit. 'We record how their brain responds to different tasks,' says Dr Allen Carr, 'and so build up a picture of each child's cognitive abilities.'

The children then receive an individual learning pack. 'Children who are "visual", for instance,' says teacher Charles Bradshaw, 'will be given work with a lot more diagrams.' As performance improves, the daily quota of course work is reduced. JB
