Gone fishing - on Jupiter
05.04.36: NASA'S ODYSSEY probe today drilled through the 8 km icecap covering Jupiter's giant moon Europa and discovered fish-like creatures thriving in the ocean below.
"We really expected to find only micro-organisms," said a Nasa biologist. Results of preliminary analysis of the organism, revealing fins similar to a terrestrial fish but no discernible sense organs, left biologists stunned.
"Its cells did not contain DNA," said project scientist Dr Jane Dessailly. "The first non-terrestrial biology is calling into question all we have ever believed about the origin of life." MC
