Dome value hits the roof
22.03.30: PRESERVATIONISTS have demanded that the government intervene to save the Millennium Dome from demolition by making it a primary national heritage site.
Since the New Millennium exhibition closed on December 31, 2000, the Dome has been used as a multipurpose sports, concert and entertainments venue. It is being suggested that the useful life of the Dome could be extended by replacing the roof with a bio-engineered polymer that grows to repair itself.
Following the growth of high-rise developments around the Dome, mirroring those on the north bank of the Thames and around Canary Wharf, the Greenwich site has become one of the most valuable in London. JM
