Unions strike hollow note
04.04.26: TO MARK the 100th anniversary of the General Strike, members of the last trade union, the Amalgamated Union of Information Technology, Retailing and Associated Staff, marched along the Embankment in London.
The union, with fewer than 1,000 members, is due to close next year because of financial difficulties. Most members are in their 60s, and police said they were not expecting trouble. The 1970s glory days, when unions had 13m paid-up members and could hold the government to ransom, are a distant memory. DS
